Chapter Thirty-One

She comes up from the fear landscape in an empty room. Then, all of the Dauntless leaders come in and congratulate her on her completion. Before she leaves, they insist that she be injected with a colored serum that supposedly holds a tracking device for in case she goes missing.

How often to people go missing, and since when do the Dauntless care?

Since she can't refuse, she takes the serum. She will find out her final rank in two hours at the initiation banquet.

When she gets out, Tobias says that if she wants some peace and quiet, she can wait for the banquet to start at his apartment. So of course she goes.

"I don't want to go back to the dormitory, and I don't want to be afraid of him." - Tris

When they get to the apartment and Tobias tries to kiss her, she pushes him away. Tobias looks hurt and when Tris tells him about her fear landscape and how she doesn't know what his expectations are, he confesses that he hasn't been in any serious relationships either.

Okay this is Tobias we're talking about...how?

When Tobias sees that Tris has a new tattoo, she shows it to him. It is a symbol of Abnegation. Then Tobias shows Tris that he has a tattoo of every faction on his back.

"We've all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own." - Tobias

He confesses that he wants to have the virtues of all of the factions, not just one.

I don't understand how Tobias wasn't actually Divergent.
